2011 Season Preview

The 2011 Crimson Knights look forward to an exciting season. After a terrific preseason, the Knights approach the regular season with a great deal of optimism as 13 Varsity letter winners return led by Co-Captain’s John O’Connor ’12, and Nicholas Merriam ’12. Gaining a tremendous amount of experience in 2010, the coaching staff, under the direction of first year Head Coach Xander Jones, hope to see the Knights play with a new sense of energy and enthusiasm.

The defense looks to be a strong point for Salisbury with John O’Connor and returning All-State player Jared Zissu ’12 anchoring an athletic group. Jake Harrington ’12 will make the move from the midfield into the back, and newcomer Addon Teye-Botchway ’15 will open the season on the left side. Chad Goldberg ’12, John Hibbard ’13, Sam Soule ’14 and Zach Langlois ’14 will provide additional depth. Nick Turecamo ’13 will see time in the back and could find time in the holding midfield role. Goalkeeping should also be a highlight for the Knights as all three goalkeepers return from 2010. Eric Jasinski ’13, Andrew Brunson ’12, and Alec Morrison ’13 all gained valuable experience last season and will battle weekly for playing time.

In the midfield, Salisbury will look to Sam Palmer ’13, Nicholas Merriam, Koji Gormezano ’14, and Chris Martin ’14. Palmer, having a very impressive preseason, established himself as a mainstay in the defensive midfield role. Nicholas Merriam, coming off an injury-riddled season, will start the season on the right side, and could be seen in both the attacking and defensive midfield spots, as well. Gormezano and Martin bring great energy to the team and should provide a spark to the Salisbury attack. Brian Teague ’12, a versatile player, could see minutes in both the midfield and the back. Theo Greenwood ’12 has a great deal of confidence on the ball and will crack the lineup in the attacking midfield role. Darby McGlone ’13 will give Salisbury extra depth in the midfield and is capable of playing both outside positions.

In the attacking third, Ondrej Krajnak ’12 and Marc Biega ’12 return for the Knights. Biega showed tremendous growth as a player in 2010, and could find himself playing numerous positions on the field. Krajnak is a strong, fit, and technical player who could appear in the scoring column numerous times this season. First year players Ahmed Alireza ’12 will provide the additional depth to the attack. Jared Zissu and John O’Connor will also see valuable minutes in the offensive end.

The 2011 season gets underway quickly with the first game slated for the second day of school when the Knights travel to Hopkins. The first few weeks include tests with Kent, cross-town rival Hotchkiss, and defending New England Champion Northfield Mount Hermon. The schedule is again very competitive with nine of the 17 matches against 2010 playoff teams.
