The focus of the golf team at Salisbury is to provide a well-rounded approach to the game of golf, working on course management, the rules of the game and the variety of skills required to play competitive team golf. A typical week would involve some combination of the following: competitive training, range work, as well as short game and putting. The team can be found either practicing or playing six days a week, with most tournament and matches taking place on Wednesday and Saturday.
Throughout the season players are exposed to a variety of different match styles. The team competes in stroke play tournaments, match play tournament as well as both small and larger tournaments throughout the season. The season culminates with the largest of the tournaments where Salisbury will compete against more than twenty of the best prep school golf programs throughout New England at the Kingswood-Oxford Invitational Tournament, held at Oak Ridge Golf Course, Feeding Meadows, MA. Another notable tournament in which the team competes on an annual basis would be the Andover Invitational held at Newport Country Club, Newport, RI.
For the past ten years, the Varsity Golf Team has traveled during March break to get a jump on the season. The trips are a wonderful opportunity for players and coaches to begin to build the required bounds associated with team golf. Over the years these trips have provided players the opportunity to play some of the top courses including Pinehurst, Medalist, Mountain Lake, McArthur and Bay Hill, to name just a few.

Through the game of golf, every student-athlete’s character and judgment is challenged on a daily basis. Unlike most high school sports there are no officials, the expectation and understanding falls on the individual and through this self-officiated situation players learn to respect the game of golf, their opponents and the importance of knowing and understanding the many rules and history behind the game. It is through golf that many of life’s lessons are taught and addressed with the players.
About Wyantenuck Golf Course:
The Salisbury Varsity Golf Team practices and plays all home matches at the Wyantenuck Country Club course located in Great Barrington, MA. Developed in 1896 as a 9 hole course, it was not until 1914, that the course was relocated, expanded and developed into the beautiful 18 hole golf course of today.
