Featured Student Artist - Rui Tao

Where are you from?  Have you lived there all your life?
I am from Shanghai. My family moved to Shanghai when I was 12 years old. At age of 16, I got the chance to study in the United States.

Tell us about your family...are there others in your family who play musical instruments?
My mum used to be a professional singer. She quit when she had me. She was really talented, and she could play several chinese traditional instruments.
My father taught me many real life lessons. He loves listening to music.

When and how did you start playing?
When I was 7, mum introduced me to the saxophone. I did not like it at all when I was a kid. I dropped it when I was 9. But I picked it up again when I came to the US.

What other saxophone players do you admire?
David Brubeck. Although, he is not technically a saxophone player, his famous piece Take Five introduced me to the Jazz music.

Is this something you will pursue as a hobby or a job?
Playing saxophone is just my hobby. However, I really love it and I realized how interesting it is to play while working with Mr. McEachern. He was such a good teacher, and he knows his stuff.

What genre of music do you enjoying playing?
I have never play any genre of music, except for Jazz. I love playing in the band with my peers and I enjoy the time with them.

What kind of music do you like to listen to?
I listen to all sorts of music. Rap, R&M, Jazz, light music, Rock, etc. It really depends on my mood.

What fascinates you?
Good music. Chinese Modern History. Hot-pot fish(A famous chinese dish). Crew.

What are you naturally good at?
I am not sure. Maybe sleeping?

Why Salisbury?
I figured out the answer after I came here. I enjoy working with the teachers here. and they will help me at any time both inside and outside the classroom. Also, being part of the Salisbury family helps me from being homesick. I love my peers at Salisbury, especially those in my crew team and my classes.

In addition, I want to say thank you to Mr.Simmons(my advisor) and Tote Smith(my crew coach). They helped me a lot outside the classroom, and made me build up my confidence.
