“The Salisbury student body performing military drill, 1917”

Between 1914 and 1918 the entire world was rocked by the great conflagration known as World War One. Salisbury School participated in that conflict in many ways, sending students, faculty, and alumni forth to serve in the military and raising funds for war relief. The entire student body also organized itself into a military company, donning khaki uniforms, performing drill several times each week, and learning battlefield tactics.

Selections from the Archives

Responding to events unfolding in Europe, Salisbury student, Henry Alex Irwin, ’16, departed school in the fall of 1915 and traveled north to join the Canadian Expeditionary Force. He received basic training near Ottawa, sailed to France, and fought in the trenches. Irwin was severely wounded in September 1916, spent months in the hospital, and was unable to return to the fighting. While in the service, Irwin penned several letters to Rev. George Quaile, and these are reprinted here for the first time since1916.
