Wrestling - Varsity
varsity wrestling

Coaches: Dave Smith, Josh Wildes

ABOUT THE TEAM:

Salisbury wrestles in the Western New England Independend School Wrestling Association. This year the team moved into a brand new 3200 square foot wrestling facility that is part of the phenomenal new Flood Athletic Center. We have revamped our competition schedule, so we wrestle quad meets on Saturdays, giving us time to lift weights twice a week in the new varsity weight room in addition to conditioing and practicing throughout the week without interruption. We expect this new schedule and additional practice to pay dividends by the end of the season. We are also putting together a comprehensive JV schedule so we can begin to develop our younger wrestlers before they reach the varsity level.

Salisbury's 2009-2010 wrestling team is excited about our new wrestling facility and the season's prospects. As a very young team, twelve first year wrestlers and ten second year wrestlers, we expect to take our lumps, but we will improve throughout the season. The team will be lead by junior Robert Ruiz, who finished third in New England last year.  Matt Muvaney is also a senior who has shown a great attitude and work ethic in his first year.

Junior Evan Boden hopes to turn his varsity experience last year into success this year, while Juniors Peter Kennedy, and Luke DeVisscher are returning for their second year of wrestling and will make important contributions to the team. We are excited to have Ryan Papalardo, Connor Canning, J.P. Ryan, Joshua Han, Ben Schlegel, and Mateo Cadavid coming out for the team for the first time as juniors.

Sophomores returning to the team from last year are Adam MacLaury, a wreslter new to varsity competition; Cameron Sprenger, who placed third at the JV New England tournament; PK. Issacs, a selfless team player; and Dylan Brodie, another sophomore with limited varsity exerience last year. All will make important contributions througout the lineup.  Nick Merriam, KJ Johnson, and Chester Hill are new Salisbury students with wrestling experience and will contribute througou t the line-up.   Albert Leong is a new sophomore and might be able to crack the line-up in the middle weights later in the season.

There are five freshmen out for the team this year: Chiye Huang, a lightweight who will likely gain varsity experience at 112; Shawal Abdur-Rahman, a middlweight with tremendous athleticism and strength; Joe Yoon, who comes to Salisbury with experience and wil try to crack the lineup in the middle weights; Nick Turecamo, an athletic first year wrestler who has shown a natural affinity for wrestling; and Preston Davie, a big enthusiastic freshman with tons of potential.

About the Coaches:

In their second year together at Salisbury David Smith and Josh Wildes will guide the Knight Wrestling Team in the 2009-20010 season. David Smith's first coaching job  was at Salisbury fifteen years ago. He left Salisbury eleven years ago and coached with the legendary Frank Millard at Northfield Mount Hermon School for two years and Andy Katz at the Landon School for seven years. Josh Wildes, a graduate of Pomfret School and the first four-time New England Prep School Champion in the history of that tournament, brings youth, enthusiasm, and great wrestling experience to Salisbury after a successful four year wrestling career at Wesleyan.
