Environmental Science & Sustainability
An understanding of the environment and sustainability is and will continue to be an important prerequisite, both for the jobs of the future and for being an informed, conscientious global citizen in general. Salisbury Summer School is proud to offer student a courses in environmental science and sustainability. We are unique among summer schools in Connecticut in that our program goes beyond textbook learning to offer an in-depth look at critical issues facing the environment today.
This course explores environmental issues from three vantage points: the unspoiled natural world, man's impact on the natural world and possible resolutions to problems. Students investigate historical and ethical approaches to man's use of the natural environment. Extensive field work is integrated into the course as a means of exploring the various ecosystems on the School' s acreage, including streams, lakes, forests and ponds.
From our rural Litchfield County campus, students are ideally situated to explore the environment. Our programming balances theoretical study with hands-on activities that engage participants while reinforcing the lessons of their coursework.
Like all of our summer school classes, the environmental science and sustainability program runs for five weeks. Lessons are held every morning, while afternoons are dedicated to sports, recreation and other activities. Participants have the opportunity to socialize and interact with other summer school students and to enjoy trips to nearby attractions, including the beautiful beaches of Connecticut and Rhode Island.
