English as a Second Language
There is no question that English fluency is an essential skill for any ambitious young student interested in working or studying abroad. Immersion has proven to be among the most effective learning methods, particularly for younger individuals — sending your child to an ESL summer school is one of the best ways to jumpstart their English language education.
Salisbury Summer School is an ESL summer school in Connecticut that offers specialized instruction for young international scholars wishing to improve their basic English skills for future study in the United States. Faculty with training in this field will work with a group of English language learners throughout the summer and will serve as both teachers and faculty advisors for most ESL students.
International students are fully integrated into all aspects of Salisbury Summer School and are given extra attention by specially trained faculty to ensure a smooth transition to life in the United States. English Language Learners (ELL) take the same core courses as native speakers, although ELL teachers will integrate the four skills of communication — reading, writing, speaking and listening — into ELL classes. At Salisbury Summer School, ELL classes are places to ask questions, not only about academic assignments, but also about language, cultural differences and adjustment to American students and faculty. ELL instructors will assist their students with summer reading assignments from other schools and fall course selections, if appropriate.
Our ELL faculty are trained in teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and are prepared to both challenge and nurture our summer school international population. Your success in language acquisition and acculturation is our success!
About Salisbury Summer School
Our ESL summer school is located in Connecticut’s Litchfield County, a two-hour drive from New York and three hours from Boston. We are ideally situated for foreign students — close enough to the big city to provide extensive opportunities for cultural immersion, yet far enough away to minimize distractions. When not busy studying, our students take part in social activities with their peers as well as day and overnight trips to nearby attractions.
In the past, our school has hosted visiting students from all over the world. We aim to create a welcoming, friendly environment for people of all backgrounds, where the opportunity to socialize with native speakers further encourages language acquisition and reinforces the lessons learned in our classroom.
