Knights Look to Lean on Depth; Excellent Work Ethic in 2024-2025 Wrestling Campaign

Eight hours of practice for 24 minutes of match time—that’s the exchange rate for members of Salisbury’s talented varsity wrestling team.

Led by Head Coach Adam Bunce, who enters his 15th season at the helm, and Assistant Coach Adam Mayer, the athletes in this demanding sport are among the hardest workers on campus. Their versatile practice schedule includes dynamic workouts, focused drills on specific moves, and muscle memory training. Strenuous conditioning sessions take place both inside and outside the wrestling room as well.

The Knights consistently compete with schools across New England and are always a tough match. This year, their depth will play an instrumental role in their success.

Returning captains Michael Taylor ’25, Dom Valcin ’25, and Robert Madison ’25 lead the largest team the Knights have fielded in over 10 years. All three captains qualified for New England’s last season and aim to do so again this year.

A vital asset to the team’s success is incorporating live wrestling into practice. Sometimes these sessions involve long, extended reps; other times, they focus on short bursts and situational wrestling. This year’s deep roster enhances the value of these practices, as each competitor brings unique strengths and weaknesses to the mat.

The Knights boast an abundance of heavyweight wrestlers, many of whom are football players looking to improve their conditioning. Istvan Szecsei ’26, Cooper Long ’26, Aidan Cuff ’27, and Harrison Jennrich ’25 are all athletic contributors expected to make a significant impact.

Being a multi-sport athlete is a common thread among the team—but by no means a requirement. Nor is competing in the heavier weight classes.

Vincent Valcin ’28 will be competing in the lighter weight classes this winter, learning the ropes from his older brother Dom. The dynamic between the two will be something to watch this season. Joining Vincent in the lighter weights is the experienced Madison, who will compete around the 130-pound class.

In the middleweight classes, Long Ngo ’26 aims to capitalize on the offseason training he’s dedicated to over the past year. Taylor and the elder Valcin will join Ngo in this category as well.

Each year, Coaches Bunce and Mayer welcome a group of students who are new to wrestling. By March, these newcomers are nearly unrecognizable from their first day on the mat, thanks to the program’s culture of hard work, perseverance, and continuous improvement.

With an expectation of 11 wrestlers competing on match day, the Knights are poised for a big year.
