A Message From Headmaster Chandler
Those who have spent time on the Hilltop during my tenure often hear me say, “schools are people.” By this, I mean that fancy buildings and elegant mission statements are nice, but the people who walk the campus each day with passion and purpose are the very heart and soul of any school. This has never been so true here on the Hilltop!
Off to an amazing start to the 2019-2020 school year, I have watched with deep admiration and reverence as colleagues carry the day with commitment and diligence bringing excellence to their calling. The classrooms at Salisbury School are filled with lively discussion and debate, and subjects are brought to life through active engagement and creative thinking. Focused solely on the needs of boys, the craft of teaching keenly guides their ultimate success and achievement. Adding new techniques to proven ways of structuring curriculum and designing lessons, we distinguish our learning community as the school that “does everything right for boys.” It is with excitement and pride that we invite you to take a look at the work done in our classrooms, in the theater, on the athletic fields, and all over campus. What an oasis the Hilltop is for boys who thirst for mentoring, brotherhood, and self-confidence.
It is the incredible leadership of those who have walked the Hilltop for over a century that have paved the way for our continued success. In honoring the faithful and unwavering service of Former Headmasters Reverend Ed Ward and Dick Flood, both of whom passed away on October 30, we celebrate the lives of two incredible, transformational Salisbury Gentlemen. A look back at their collective 30-plus years highlights the character and character of these quintessential school masters.
The bonds of brotherhood born on the Hilltop often last a lifetime. Learning, working and playing together connect our boys in a very unique way. It is wonderful to see those friendships continue to thrive, as our alumni remain in touch over the years. One such connection led a partnership for the good of a community in need. Jeff Erdmann and Nick Lieder, members of the class of 1981 have joined forces in their work with The Open Door Shelter in Norwalk, CT. In the piece, Brotherhood for Good, see how their desire to make life better for people in their community has touched one Connecticut city as Salisbury brothers take on a common mission of service.
This fall, we also took time to honor Salisbury alumni who have served our country. Our Veterans Day celebration featured two U.S. Marines, Jeremy Winters '94 and Murphy Bright '06, who spoke to the community about our calling card, the Salisbury Brotherhood and roots planted here at School now stretching far beyond the Hilltop. They shared stories of dedicated service to the Country on the front lines abroad in Iraq and Afghanistan among others and here at home at the Pentagon. Their words of wisdom and recollections of their own Salisbury experience were met with great appreciation by all who gathered in the Miles P.H. Seifert '53 Theater. Throughout the month of November, we continued to recognize and thank alumni from the U.S. Armed Services on our social media outlets. These men live the Sarum core values of loyalty, honor, service, devotion, and we humbly offer our gratitude for their many achievements and the glory they bestow on the Hilltop.
I would also draw your attention to Sarum Gives to introduce our newest tradition of Legends Weekend. Alumni celebrating reunions beyond their 50th were welcomed back to campus for a special weekend of programming and celebration. It was a time for renewed friendships and re-connection to Salisbury. The memories of school days coupled with a view of the current goings on of campus life resulted in shared pride in the Salisbury experience and Brotherhood. We look forward to future Legends Weekends!
