Celebrating AAPI Heritage Month on the Hilltop

May is Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month. Salisbury approached the opportunity to highlight this heritage by first talking to students to see what resonated for them. In a brief video to his Sarum brothers, Calum Chau '21 shared, "In my family, we show our love through food. I've shared some of my grandmother's recipes, and hopefully you'll see them soon in the dining hall." See recipes here

Food and flavors tell a story. They have a history. They offer both mirrors and windows. We are excited to highlight recipes from students in the AAPI community and share together around the table to which all are welcome.

In a presentation at the beginning of the school year by Director of Inclusion and Equity Education Meg Allen, our students explored the ways that telling our stories, and listening to the stories of others, helps to strengthen community. Using the metaphor of "mirrors and windows", students discussed how stories can reflect our own experiences back to us and can also provide an important look into the experience of those who are different from us. We need both mirrors and windows for a healthy community, and we are excited to seek them out at every opportunity.
