Other Information

Growing up spending summers with a friend of her family who was deaf, Rita became intrigued with the possibilities of teaching children with hearing loss. She studied speech pathology at Hunter College in New York, where she graduated with honors. She later earned a graduate assistant position at the University of Minnesota and continued her studies in the education of the deaf. Rita returned to the east coast when she was offered a position to teach in the elementary grades at the New York School for the Deaf. She moved up to teach in the middle school and was instrumental in starting a ballet program for the deaf students there. She remained at NYSD for 14 years. Rita left teaching for six years to be at home with two young children before taking a position at Coral Springs High School (FL). There she instituted a course of study in American Sign Language as part of the Foreign Language Department. Rita became active in the deaf community and was named vice president of the Deaf Service Center of Broward County. At Salisbury, Rita lives in Carr House with her husband Instructor in Mathematics Jeff Ruskin. They have two daughters and a son.
