Varsity Cross Country
History of the Program
Salisbury students began competing in track events as early as 1909, but only in intramural meets featuring the Taconic and Berkshire squads. Each year, a late spring event, known as Field Day, was held between these two rivals. In 1927, Salisbury sent a track team to New Haven to compete in the Yale interscholastic meet. Not until 1976, however, did cross country running make its way on to the Salisbury roster of fall sports. The squad was formed under the leadership of Coach Bruce Blodgett, who directed the program for many years. Leadership duties then fell to Coach Dennis Wachter, who led the runners for many seasons thereafter.
