Harriers Race Past Gunnery, Succumb to Millbrook
On a muggy, overcast afternoon, Salisbury hosted a double-dual cross-country meet on Saturday and emerged with a 26-33 win over The Gunnery and a 23-34 loss to Westminster. In taking 1st place in the individual standings, The Gunnery’s top finisher set a new record with a time of 18:37 over the 3.28-mile course. Kazuki Unayama of Millbrook captured 2nd-place and, in clocking a 19:25, also broke the old course-record. Jack Gottsegen once again produced Salisbury’s top individual result, grabbing 3rd place with a time of 20:15.
Assistant coach Tom Severo presented the report that follows.
“The 2nd-place finish,” Severo reported, “was particularly dramatic, as Unayamai fell during the course and still managed to snag 2nd place overall, breaking the course record in the process. Rounding out the Salisbury scorers were Rob “Central “ Kasten (7th; 21:43), “Harrison” Ford Cousin (8th; 1:45) , team captain Logan “Wolverine” LaPole (13th / 23:11), and Jack “Jay Z” Zahn (15th / 23:27).
“The Knights fared well,” Severo continued, “on a course that is not only slightly longer, but also significantly hillier, root-laden, and treacherous than most all they’ll face this season. Even with the added distance and degree-of-difficulty, many Salisbury runners posted large PRs. The team hopes to take this momentum into its matchup next week against Kent and Westminster at Kent.”
