Knights Top Nobles, Claim 3rd Place at Flood-Marr
Noble and Greenough gave Salisbury all the Knights could handle before two empty-net goals in the closing minutes provided the cushion for a 5-2 victory over the stubborn Bulldogs. With the win, Salisbury (8-0-1) claimed 3rd place in the Flood-Marr Holiday Tournament and remained unbeaten heading into the Christmas break.
Although the result helped erase the memory of last year’s debacle, where the Knights had to win on the final day of the tournament to avoid a winless record and a last-place finish, it was tough to watch Kimball Union Academy top Westminster to claim the Flood-Marr Championship after Salisbury had lost the right to play in the final – on a coin-flip. Two days earlier, Salisbury and KUA had played to a 2-2 tie, but there are no overtimes or shoot-outs in the tournament’s format for Friday-Saturday group play. When both teams won their ensuing group-games with Milton and Deerfield – by identical 6-2 and 3-2 scores, respectively – it came down to the coin-toss.
Somehow, it was hard to avoid the feeling that #1-ranked Salisbury and #3 KUA both deserved a better fate. Perhaps there will be an occasion in March to resolve the issue. In the meantime, there is a lot of regular-season hockey to play.
